Additional Notes: Indigo-dyed fabrics experienced incredible popularity throughout Slovakia in the 19th and 20th century and were used for nearly all elements of folk dress including skirts, aprons, jackets, vests, and shawls. This kerchief is a nice example of an everyday kerchief that is striking in its simplicity, both elegant and decorative without the use of ornamentation. It was collected in the Hont region of southern Slovakia though identical examples were worn in many regions of the country. Can be worn or used as a decorative element of home decor. The highly shiny surface of Slovak blueprint textiles was originally achieved by polishing the cloth with a special glass implement. The reference images above show women wearing similar blueprint kerchiefs at the turn of the last century.
