Era: Early 20th century (circa 1910-1930)
Condition: very good; insignificant losses to red wool embroidery threads; very minor pink color transfer to neighboring white embroidery; missing waist ties; quite remarkable condition considering age; suitable for both wear and display
Measurements (with garments laying flat):
Waistband: 14″ across + 6.5″ past apron sides
Length: 24″ including lace
Additional Notes: The aprons of the Kyjov region are some of the most spectacular works of textile folk art seen in traditional folk dress. Made of indigo-dyed cloth, the apron is meticulously hand embroidered and decorated with handmade 5″ wide, multi-color linen lace along the bottom edge. The embroidery is 6″-9″ wide with stunning detail and colors that remain bright and clean despite being over 100 years old. It’s possible that the waistband is not original, but if it was replaced it was done a very long time ago and is entirely consistent with local tradition so this does not detract from the piece in any way. A true masterpiece of folk embroidery.
