Description
Origin: Ukraine
Era: Early 20th century (circa 1910-1930)
Condition: good; discoloration and wear along center fold from wear; couple very small worn thin spots/holes; wear to corners; suitable for both wear and display
Measurements (with garments laying flat): approximately 51″ square
Additional Notes: Such large shawls were traditionally folded along the diagonal and used as a head covering with the ends covering the neck and shoulders. The elegant floral motif is hard to photograph, but looks stunning in real life when the light hits it. Plain black cotton warp with mercerized cotton weft giving a purple tint to the design. Such shawls were worn in nearly all regions of Ukraine including Borshchiv/Podillia and central Ukraine and were also sometimes decorated with fringe along the edges as shown in the final photo above. Scarce to find in such good, complete condition with no major damages.
