Description: Excellent volume about the traditional Slovenian folk costumes of the Poljana Valley. This remote region in the Alps had its own folk costumes that was worn through the end of the 19th century. Folk costumes were replaced by more modern city clothing in the early 20th century, and only elderly folk continued to wear elements of folk costumes through WWII. Now the costumes are only used by two local folk dance groups in the region and little remains of the authentic costumes. The authors looked at historic photographs and conducted personal interviews with inhabitants of the region in order to record the information for future generations. The book includes photos, illustrations, patterns, and details of various costume elements. Very little has been published on the history of Slovenian fashion and folk costumes, so this book, part of a larger series on regional folk costumes from Slovenia, is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the field.
