Description: Excellent volume about the traditional Slovenian folk costumes of villages in the Bela Krajina. The book looks at the so-called “white” female and male costumes made from homespun linen, still in use in the first half of the 20th century. The author also compares the Slovenian costumes of this region to the Croatian dress on the other side of the Kolpa River. The remoteness of the area and its strong local traditions helped preserve the folk costumes of this region longer than in other parts of Slovenia. The authors looked at historic photographs and conducted personal interviews with inhabitants of the region in order to record the information for future generations. The book includes photos, illustrations, patterns, and details of various costume elements. Very little has been published on the history of Slovenian fashion and folk costumes, so this book, part of a larger series on regional folk costumes from Slovenia, is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the field.
