Era: Turn of the century (circa 1890-1910)
Condition: very good; natural aging and wear; no broken beads; on old string; suitable for both wear and display
Measurements: 24″ long | 84 grams weight
Additional Notes: A beautiful antique mother-of-pearl (nacre) necklace from Ukraine “balamuti“. Similar necklaces were worn as part of traditional costumes in Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, and other neighboring countries. Hand carved and in beautiful condition. Not restrung and in the original condition as found. The general scarcity of these beads makes them very desirable given that they were once an important element of folk costumes and create a visual contrast when paired with other peasant jewelry such as coral and amber. The final photo above shows this necklace with several other necklaces from our shop to show how such an assemblage might have looked at the turn of the 19th century.
