Additional Notes: Skirts such as these came into fashion after WWII and were worn together with waist-length blouses as a more flattering fitted alternative to the traditional full-length dresses called “sorochky”. Some skirts were made from the bottom halves of older sorochky, while others were designed and made specifically as skirts. This homespun linen skirt is likely an example of the former as it is of very high quality and has a newer elastic band sewn into the waistband. Features red and black floral embroidery that was popular all over Ukraine thanks to western European patterns found their way to villages around the turn of the century.
